Where rugged has to mean just that

If you wanted a typical view of the kind of terrain where a ruggedised tablet PC would be in its element, here it is. These men are engaged in trials of land seismic data acquisition systems for NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration), and are using an Xplore iX104C2 rugged PC supplied by the UK's Spirit Data Capture.

The user is Vibtech (Vibration Technology), which is based near Edinburgh and specialises in wireless solutions for the oil, gas and mineral exploration sectors. It has been trialling various scenarios for using the tablet computer either to transmit data back to base, or to store it locally.

According to VibTech technical manager Steve Wilcox: "The Xplore allows us to offer NASA and other organisations a simple, one-man operable system at a relatively low cost. We particularly like its portability and its long battery life."

Spirit Data Capture is an authorised distributor of the Xplore range, which is also offered by other suppliers such as Psion Teklogix.
