Real-time navigation, online map access from MapQuest
MapQuest, the American-based online mapping specialist now owned by AOL, has launched a bid for the real-time navigation market with the announcement of a product for mobile phones. Initially it is expected to be offered through US-based mobile phone specialists, but could appear elsewhere later. MapQuest also announced that it is making it easier for consumers with Web-enabled mobile phones to access MapQuest.com, its existing free online mapping service. This service, which is already available now, is designed and formatted for mobile phones, and is said to provides a convenient way for anyone with a Web-enabled phone to access interactive maps, get driving directions and find places. The mobile version is based on technology from InfoGin, a pioneer of Web-to-mobile content adaptation solutions. Consumers can access this service on their mobile phones by going to http://wap.mapquest.com.The company says MapQuest Navigator will offer GPS-based turn-by-turn, voice-guided directions on mobile phones, along with full-colour maps, graphics and text. The navigation service is a little further off (a launch in the US is planned for later this year). The mapping elements are being provided in association with navigation specialist Telmap, and will use its MOND technology (it stands for Mobile Optimised Navigation Data).
The system is said to include a database of millions of restaurants, hotels, theatres and other points of interest. Users will be able to navigate to them, dial them up to make reservations, or send coordinates of any location to other users via text messages.
