Civil engineering company saves by tracking
D Morgan, a civil engineering company specialising in land remediation, has equipped its entire fleet of large tipper vehicles with a vehicle tracking and resource management solution from Masternaut. The company owns over a hundred heavy plant vehicles, which are used on a variety of projects. These range from specialist land remediation for the UK Atomic Energy Authority to the creation of a new forest in Manchester for the Forestry Commission. The company also offers equipment for hire. The new system identifies each vehicle and calculates its position by GPS, and transmits this information via GPRS to a central server, where it can be accessed in real time by any Web-enabled PC. The information on vehicle positions is displayed using Microsoft MapPoint online street mapping. The company's original objective in adopting telematics was to improve security and reduce the risk of stolen equipment. However, according to director John Dennan: "This is only one of the benefits the system has delivered. They also include improved business efficiencies." The Masternaut service provides emailed daily activity reports, which can be used to calculate vehicle mileage or for preventive maintenance, or to calculate hire charges.
