How to toughen up a standard PDA
Even among those who deploy PDAs in the workplace, it is acknowledged that they can lack the ruggedness of an industrial-build handheld computer, even though they offer other benefits. Mobile application specialist FD-TEK thinks it may have a solution that gives PDA users the best of both worlds - the OtterBox 1900 PDA case, which it is importing from the US. The OtterBox is basically a waterproof, crushproof, drop-proof casing for consumer-style PDAs. The PDA is inserted into the glass-reinforced polycarbonate shell, which has a thermoplastic rubber over-moulding for extra grip and impact resistance (it has been tested to withstand four drops on to concrete). The seal is dustproof and waterproof, meeting the highest IP67 standard. A Gore-Tex membrane prevents internal moisture build-up. There is a clear polycarbonate flip-up screen cover which protects the screen from scratches while providing easy access to front panel buttons, so you can still view and enter data. (There is an external stylus mount.) Open port tabs provides access to CF and SD slots, while the sealed bottom hatch provides access to the PDA's sync and charge connectors. Accessories include a belt clip and vehicle mount. There are three sizes to accommodate the various accessories that might be used, taking account of add-ons such as scanners and GPS modems.
