Wearable PCs streamline street lighting service
The division of the Amey infrastructure and support group that deals with street lighting says a mobile computer system now used by its engineers has helped improve data capture and record keeping, and given the company " a real edge" in customer service. The hardware consists of what is being called a "wearable" tablet-style PC from US-based Xybernaut, while the software is Mayrise Systems' street lighting system, as well as MapNow, the Mayrise mapping system. Amey engineers now update information about on-street infrastructure though on-screen street maps displaying lighting unit locations, and the information is then synchronised by wireless link with a central database. Amey has won contracts to update street lighting with a range of local authorities, including those in Walsall, Manchester and Wakefield.
