Benefits staff check up on incomes from the field
Mobile revenues and benefits staff working for Babergh District Council in south Suffolk can now check on the income and other financial details of householders making benefit claims direct from the field in real time, using a system supplied by AppSwing. The system is built round PDA-style handheld terminals from Hand Held Products. These Windows Mobile-based devices communicate via GRPS with the council's IBS open systems computer application. The communications link is managed by AppSwing's AppServer technology. According to Kevin Peck at Babergh District Council: "There was a strong business case for selecting AppSwing for this solution. It offered low risk because it required no changes to the back office systems." Other attractions included affordability and secure access to the required data, he adds. "We have high expectations that Babergh will realise significant cash and non-cash benefits." Babergh takes in the towns of Sudbury and Hadleigh, along with the village of Great Cornard, and has a population of 130,000.
