Shell tracks gas tankers with BOX solution

Shell Gas (LPG) has chosen the SpotonBOX vehicle tracking and location system from BOX Telematics in a campaign to equip its delivery fleet with a full mobile management solution.

The system supplied by BOX reflects the sensitivity of the operation. Not only does it monitor functions such as location and speed; it has also been adapted to deal with theft, potential hazards, accidents and driver issues. Alerts can be sent automatically to the company's headquarters, and information can also be sent to managers out of hours via SMS text messages.

The system is built round a GSM/GPRS telemetry unit which is fitted to each tanker. This communicates every minute back to a server via one of the mobile phone networks, allowing Shell to track data over the Internet. Geofences have been set up so that alarms are raised automatically if a vehicle leaves its secure compound out of normal hours, or strays from its normal working area.

Routine fleet management functions are also part of the proposition. The remote monitoring facility has enabled Shell to track tanker location history, learning more about the business and ensuring that high levels of customer service are maintained.

Richard Buggins, operations manager at Shell Gas (LPG), says the BOX telematics solution "clearly demonstrates its security, productivity and customer benefits with real-time turnkey solutions."
