Smart but rugged truck-mount from Symbol

The latest truck-mounted computer from Symbol looks remarkably like a desktop model - especially when supplied complete with the optional 12.1in 800 by 600 pixel SVGA screen, on which the Windows CE implementation looks much like its XP counterpart. A 10in wide half-SVGA screen is the alternative.

Behind its smart exterior, the VC5090 features industrial and military grade specifications for vibration, shock, temperature and sealing, as well as touch-screen input for use by warehouse staff with gloves on.

The processor is Intel's XScale PXA270, running at an impressive 624 MHz, and the operating system is Windows CE 5.0 Professional. You get 64 or 182MB of SDRAM and 192MB of flash memory, as well as an SD card slot.

In keeping with its warehouse role, the unit is said to allow seamless connectivity to virtually any wireless local area network via 802.11a/b/g, as well as providing wireless scanning and printing through Bluetooth. There is also support for voice-picking and voice over IP (VoIP) communication via a push-to-talk handset.

Alongside the unit itself, Symbol is pushing its "Service from the Start with Comprehensive Coverage" range of damage cover options, which can include repairs necessitated by accidental damage to displays, touch screens, plastics and internal components. The three-year agreement includes a three-day in-house turnround time for products sent to Symbol repair centres.
