Boss gets warning if driver overloads

A vehicle tracking system with a built-in lorry overloading warning is being promoted in a joint initiative by Navman Wireless and Red Forge, an on-board weighing specialist.

Overloading is one of a number of on-vehicle functions that can be captured by a telematics system equipped with suitable sensors, but few suppliers have so far set their stall out to offer it as a clearly-delineated telematics product.

Whilst Red Forge's system already provides driver alerts in the event of overloading, the joint package takes the process a stage further by delivering the warning wirelessly to the operator back at base. It is said to be suitable for both light and heavy goods vehicles.

According to Iain Moody, Red Forge's senior sales engineer: "We had been aware of Navman's innovations in vehicle tracking technology for some time, and were keen to work with them. By pooling our expertise, we've been able to create a product that meets a genuine industry need."

He points out that the fine for a single axle overload in the UK can be up to £5,000.
