Free mobile mapping
The drive to get mobile mapping accepted in the consumer mainstream has been given further impetus with the launch of what is described as a free product called Map24 Mobile from German-based developer Mapsolute. It's a system for multimedia mobile phones and PDAs. To use it, you just fill in a single entry field with part of the address you want to find postcode, the city or a street name) in any order, and the system will display a map showing you where it is in relation to where you are. The mapping is being supplied by Navteq, and includes turn restrictions, one-way streets and so on, as well as points of interest. It's not a full-fledged satnav system, but if you know where you are already and where you want to be, it looks a neat and easy-to-use option. Map24 already has a Web portal where you similar functionality is available online through the normal Internet.
