Opticons handheld contender
The latest ruggedised handheld computer from Japanese manufacturer Opticon, the PHL 7000, outperforms similar products from rivals in terms of its feature/price ratio, according to UK data capture specialist Worldwide Solutions, which is now selling it in the UK. Although not offering the fastest in terms of processing power, the PHL 7000 is respectably specified, having a 400MHz Intel XScale processor, 64MB of flash ROM, 128MB SDRAM. It has an integral laser scanner, and can also be equipped with an RFID scanner. Connectivity options include GSM/GPRS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking. The operating system is Windows CE .Net 4.2. The unit is has IP54 certification for dust and water resistance, and is said to be IP64-compliant. Optional extras include a pistol-grip handle and AC charging adapter.
