Navman aims to keep vehicles running like clockwork
ClockWork is the rather clever name adopted by vehicle tracking specialist Navman Wireless Business Solutions for a new Working Time Directive compliance tool. Although a variety of other systems have been launched this year with Working Time capabilities, Navman claims that this one represents a first the way it enhances standard telematics functions. In essence, it monitors driver activity as well as vehicles, and Navman says this means it can provide irrefutable proof of compliance in the event of any spot checks by VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) or the HSE (Health and Safety Executive). Perhaps more useful to fleet managers, it also allows them to react instantly to stop any drivers from working longer than the stipulated limits. Drivers are prompted automatically to update the employer on their status every time it changes. Pop-up on-screen reminder messages, combined with a clear audio prompt, tell them drivers to update head office with details on whether they are loading, waiting for a customer or travelling on a ferry, for example. ClockWork costs 25p a day as an add-on to the company's core products - the M-Nav 650 (which offers combined satellite navigation and vehicle tracking) and its MDT 860 Navman's mobile messaging terminal.
