Smartcard reader aims to simplify tach data downloading
An extremely easy-to-use digital tachograph card reader suitable for deploying in the field has been launched by Microlise, the vehicle tracking and fleet management specialist. The reader has GPRS connectivity, so that the data can be transferred wirelessly from the vehicle to the operator's base - helping to ensure that record-keeping requirements can be met, regardless of where the driver is at the time. Ethernet wired networking is provided as an alternative. The device can be configured to download the data as soon as the card is inserted, so there is no need for the driver to do anything except slot it in. Microlise is also offering a data capture device for downloading the data stored within the tachograph itself. This connects to the reader via a USB port, allowing the reader to transmit the data in the same way as with cards. The reader can be powered from mains electricity via an adapter, or from a vehicle cigar lighter socket.
