Tracking saves on MOD building services operation

Vehicle tracking by Masternaut has been chosen by building service and maintenance company Ian Williams for a contract it has won to provide to Ministry of Defence family accommodation units.

The operation is part of a £700 million MoD contract awarded to MODern Housing Solutions, a joint venture between Carillion, Atkins and Enterprise Plc. It covers the maintenance and small works at over 40,000 accommodation units.

The Ian Williams operation covers around 12,000 properties in the South East, West and South West. The company is also acting as specialist subcontractor on a painting services operation involving 14,500 MOD properties. It is working from nine response units and four painting units with a 250-strong dedicated workforce.

Masternaut uses GPS to establish the location of each vehicle, this information is automatically transmitted via GPRS with the position of vehicles displayed against Microsoft MapPoint online street mapping.

Williams says the tracking system "noticeably reduces" downtime, and therefore improves efficiency, and there are also health and safety benefits.
