Unlimited mobile Internet access from 3
A new charging model for mobile broadband that could send shock waves through the market has been announced by UK-based mobile network operator 3. News was just coming in as m.logistics closed for press, and we will bring more details next time. In brief, 3's X-Series system will offer a range of services on top of normal voice services for a flat monthly fee, including unlimited Internet access and instant text messaging - plus unlimited Internet VoIP telephony via Skype. For a little more, consumers will also be able to view their own home TV via the Sling service. Yahoo!, Google and Microsoft have also been involved in the project. 3 is harnessing a range of advanced mobile technologies for the service, including HSDPA and HSUPA network speed upgrades and peer-to-peer technologies. But the pricing is so far unclear. 3 is simply saying the service "will be priced like fixed-line broadband" - evidently a carefully-worded but noncommittal formulation. Analysts are cautious. Ovum calls it "a stride forward", but says 3 is moving into uncharted territory; over-pricing could limit the appeal, but under-pricing would reduce its own role to Internet access provider.
