Panasonic updates swivel-screen CF19 and launches new flagship laptop

Seldom a month passes without a new launch in Panasonic's stable of Toughbook ruggedised mobile computers. This time the newcomers are the company's flagship CF-30 model and its CF-19, the successor to the stylish and distinctive CF-18 (the laptop with a swivelling monitor that folds down to convert it into a tablet PC).

The CF-30 is based on Intel's latest Napa-Generation Centrino platform, including its 945GMS Express notebook chipset. The underlying Core Duo L2400 processor is rated at a scorching 1.66GHz, and is backed by 512K of RAM, expandable to 4GB. Options include an integrated GPS module including a modern SIRF antenna and EGNOS system support for exact positioning.

Many of the features of the CF-19 are carried forward from its predecessor, but it is faster and more versatile. In comes Intel's Core Duo processor (in U2400 guise), replacing the 1.2GHz Pentium. Unfortunately, you can't directly compare speeds; the Core is much faster, though its rating its 1.06 GHz - aided by Intel's fast 945GM Express notebook chipset.

This is backed up by 512 MB RAM memory, expandable to 4 GB (compared with 1.5GB in the old model) and 80 GB hard disk (60GB before).

Both models benefit from Intel's Centrino mobile communications technology, including Wi-Fi up to G speeds, and the option of an HSPDA module for "3.5G" fast wireless comms over 3G mobile phone data networks.

The CF-19 will be available in two versions - one with a touch screen and Windows XP Professional preinstalled, the other with a digitiser screen design and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. This operating system provides for new features such as handwriting recognition.

The retail price for the standard CF-20 model is £2,528.90, and for the CF-19 model £1,978.90.
