Savi expands under Lockheed, maintains security focus
Savi Group is the new name for an enlarged container and asset tracking business built around the former Savi Technology business. Savi has for several years been at the forefront of developments in global real-time container and asset tracking, using radio frequency identification as its core resource. In June of 2006 the company was acquired by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin, and now Lockheed has rolled its own tracking and asset management solutions into the Savi pot, whilst keeping on the Savi name. It says Savi's enlarged portfolio will include the development and delivery of integrated in-transit visibility systems, cargo security and mobile asset management solutions. The focus on large, security-oriented projects remains; key customers cited by the company include the US Department of Homeland Security, US Department of Defense (including the US Transportation Command and the Defense Logistics Agency), and other government agencies. This security focus is emphasised by the appointment of Ron Nakamoto as chief operating officer. Previously he was vice president, intelligence systems for Lockheed Martin IS&S Integrated Systems & Solutions. However, port and terminal operators and commercial customers are still targeted too, and the company says it wants to "leverage" the Savi Networks joint venture between with Hutchison Port Holdings, which forms the key to its SaviTrack service.
