Workbuddy offers smarter tracking

The Workbuddy personal alarm from Buddy Alert Systems can now report the location of the person sounding an alarm with much greater accuracy, and can also function as a low-cost satellite tracking system.

In both cases, the additional features are offered to users who combine Workbuddy with new-generation PDAs running the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, and either use these with a linked GPS module, or have GPS incorporated in the PDA.

Workbuddy is an attractively-packaged device like a keyfob (in fact it is described as a "fob"), which connects to the user's mobile phone via Bluetooth wireless link. A button on the unit allows the user to transmit an alert back to base in the event of an emergency.

There are various versions, including one which locates the person with a building or site, and requires a base station within the site. Another works anywhere, using GSM cell-ID location to find the person's location.

The latest versions allow a portable or built-in GPS unit to be used with the mobile phone, providing much greater pinpoint location accuracy. Software to support tracking and field service applications is also available.

Workbuddy Bluetooth fobs cost £30 per annum per fob, and monthly service charges start from £5.99.

• Buddy Alert Systems tells us it wants to appoint distributors to market its personal alarms. You can contact the company on resellers@buddysafe.com.
