Instant positioning with stored A-GPS data
Future GPS-enabled mobile phones should be able to tell you where you are more quickly than today's tracking devices. An updated version of the AssistNow GPS service unveiled by Swiss developer u-blox AG at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona stores A-GPS (assisted GPS) signals for up to a fortnight, so that the data is available as soon as you request your position. You don't have to connect to the mobile phone network every time you need it. A-GPS reference data enhances the accuracy of standard GPS, but often increases the 'acquisition time' on startup, since the device has to collect A-GPS data as well as orienting itself to the current GPS satellite constellation. The company also launched a chip with dual GPS-Galileo capability in anticipation of the launch of Galileo - Europe's answer to the American GPS system - which is due in a few years' time.
