Satellite positioning enhances highway maintenance reporting
Satellite positioning has been added to the mobile highways inspections and asset mapping systems available from Mayrise Systems. The idea is that highways inspectors and surveyors will be able to record the location of assets or defects through a map-based interface, ensuring that they have noted the exact spot. In the existing Mayrise system, maps are displayed on the PDA devices carried by the mobile workers, using a feature called Mayrise Mobile MapNow. This allows maps to be viewed on the handheld, updated in the field, and then synchronised with the maps back at the office, so that new information is transferred from mobiles to the central database. Now that GPS location has been added, the maps viewed by the workers can be centred automatically on the location where they are at the time.
It is a two-way system. Maintenance schedules and defect reports from the public are entered into the database back at base, then transferred to the mobiles for action; and action reports recorded by the mobile teams are uploaded back to the database. The result is said to be a major reduction in paperwork, since keying-in of reports is eliminated. Moreover, inspectors and surveyors can complete their tasks without returning to the office.
