Aberdeen Will Recover £220,000 telematics investment in a year
Aberdeen City Council has spent £220,000 on a telematics and tracking system for its waste collection and street cleaning services - and says it expects to recoup the investment within a year. It has chosen the Cybit Fleetstar-Online system, and a consultancy exercise by the supplier is said to have revealed potential productivity savings worth £300,000 a year. If realised, they will result in a net gain of £80,000 in the first year alone, and pure savings in following years. The decision to buy followed a six-month trial, which suggested that Aberdeen could enhance the productivity of the whole fleet by ensuring on-time scheduling and route optimisation. The background to this development is that the council has had to introduce extra and different vehicles and procedures over the past five years to take account of issues such as the demand for waste recycling. Council business analyst Mark Ansell says the added complexity of the operation made a modern management solution essential.
