Major order for Symbol/Motorola handhelds

One of the biggest orders ever for MC3090 handheld terminals, developed by Symbol and now carrying Motorola branding, has been announced by Hermes Logistics Group, a leading German supply-chain specialist.

It is taking no fewer than 23,000 of the devices, and has already deployed around 8,000 of them in the Hamburg area. The rest will be rolled out over the next two years.

Hermes is said to have chosen the MC3000 series for its robust yet ergonomic design. It is also said to have been attracted by the special service and maintenance contract backing them up, which is now supported by Motorola.

The project is being led by a local mobility solutions specialist, PDS Entwicklungs- und Service GmbH, which also developed and customised the system software.

The range of functionality and features offered by the MC3000 also influenced Hermes. They include a 2D imager, which enables drivers to read two-dimensional codes such as PDF417 (a Symbol development), Datamatrix and QR-Code, as well as barcodes. The device can also store high-resolution pictures.
