Only half of hauliers have adopted telematics, but a third plan to
Just half of the UK's haulage industry has so far invested in telematics technology, according to a survey by business and financial adviser Grant Thornton. But almost a third of UK hauliers (32 per cent) are thinking of spending on telematics in the next twelve months. The greatest uptake of telematics (69 per cent) is within medium-sized fleets turning over £6 million to £10 million, the survey says. In larger fleets (£11 million plus), uptake is just 37 per cent; but this is also the group with the greatest number of organisations (47 per cent) planning to implement telematics technology. Grant Thornton reckons the cost of introducing telematics is £800 per vehicle - possibly more than a lot of operators might expect - but on the other hand it says the payback period can be 12 months or less. And that's even without taking account of improvements in customer service.
