Sleekest handheld yet? Motorola unveils Symbols MC35
Possibly the last new ruggedised handheld terminal to emerge with Symbol branding is the MC35, which is now a product of new owner Motorola. Appropriately, it sums up the subtle market convergence that has been in evidence in recent years between business and personal computing, coming perhaps closer than any previous Symbol product to a consumer-style device. At a glance the MC35 resembles a big brother, the MC70, though its casing is smaller and at 185g including battery, it weighs little more than half as much. Its 2.8in quarter VGA screen, however, is almost as big. There is a full QWERTY keyboard beneath the touch screen. The processor is an XScale unit running at 416MHz - not quite as fast as the MC70's - which is supported by 64MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM. Other features include embedded GPS and GPRS/EDGE connectivity and 802.11g wireless networking. One- and two-dimensional barcode imaging is offered, and the unit can also take 2 megapixel digital photos. In terms of ruggedness, the MC35 outshines conventional PDAs; the quoted performance is 150 tumbles from 1.5ft with battery fitted.
