Tracking system underpins young driver curfew insurance scheme
Independent insurance broker ProtectaGroup is monitoring young drivers using the VL-Fleet GPS-based vehicle tracking system from VeriLocation. The system is supporting an insurance system called ProtectaGroup Young Driver, which offers young customers reduced premiums if they agree not to drive between 11pm and 5am. The Verilocation system checks whether they adhere to this undertaking. A Verilocation 'black box' unit is fitted to the vehicle, and sends a signal back to base automatically if the vehicle is used during the prohibited hours. When this happens, the insurer is presented next day with a report giving details of when and where the vehicle was driven. The company can then contact the driver and request an additional premium - an arrangement that is made in advance as part of the deal. Group technical director Ian Brown describes VL-Fleet as 'a valuable and under-used tool', and says he tested it himself before the system went live, and found that outside its role in the insurance system, it offers 'extremely useful É reports that can save a lot of time'.
