Wilkinson chooses Psion for voice roll-out
Around 630 Psion Teklogix Workabout Pro handheld computers using Vocollect technology feature in a major order for voice-picking warehouse technology placed by retail giant Wilkinson. It is believed to be the biggest single voice picking implementation using multi-function handheld terminals in the world so far. The total value of the contract is put at £1.4 million. The system is being deployed in two logistics centres - at Magor, South Wales, and Manton Wood, Worksop. Between them these provide Wilkinson with over 2.3 million sq ft of storage space, and store more than 25,000 live units at any one time. Goods come in from suppliers worldwide and are held in stock prior to onward delivery to Wilkinson's 283 stores. The system is based on Psion Teklogix's TekSpeech speech recognition solution, which provides speech-directed interaction between the mobile worker and the host system. The system is said to have involved close technical collaboration between Vocollect and Psion Teklogix. It will interface with Wilkinson's existing AS/400 computer system and the company's warehouse management system, which was developed in-house. The new technology will replace an existing paper-based system, and is expected to deliver a return on investment within ten months on the basis of forecast increases in productivity alone. Anticipated gains in stock control and order picking accuracy are expected to shorten the ROI time still further.
