Fast and fully-specified - Sockets bid for the business PDA market
The SoMo 650, a PDA-style handheld computer for business applications, has been given a European launch by Socket, a company previously known better for its barcode scanning devices and peripherals. The company says it is designed to meet 'the functionality and form-factor requirements of small and mid-sized mobile deployments'. It is priced at £450 retail. In keeping with its business market aspirations, the SoMo is said to have been tested to prove resistance to multiple 1-metre drops on to vinyl-covered concrete. The weight is put at under 180g including standard battery and stylus. The device comes with Intel's fast 624MHz PXA270 processor, which is matched to 128MB of SDRAM and 256MB of flash memory. The operating system is Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Professional, complete with all the office applications that come with this. The display is a 3.5in quarter VGA touchscreen TFT with 16 bit-per-pixel 240px by 320px resolution. Wireless connectivity includes 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. Socket says pre-integration is available with a wide range of peripherals and information systems such as scanning, RFID and communications and interface devices. Socket itself provides a wide range of compatible equipment, including a plug-in scanner. The device is supplied through Socket Mobile authorised resellers.
