New-generation in-cab unit can serve as communication hub
A new-generation in-cab telematics unit has been launched by telematics specialist Minorplanet, ushering in a range of extended capabilities that are being marketed with its VMIgreenlight tracking system. Unlike previous, relatively passive and self-contained in-cab telematics units, the new AEM6000 unit is built with expansion in mind, and can provide the underlying core of a fully-interactive driver management system. The AEM6000 can incorporate a range of features, including what is described as a 'mini-computer', along with hands-free voice communications and satellite navigation. It allows direct connection to on-board systems such weighing and temperature monitoring devices, and can optionally include a CANbus interface, allowing capture of driver and vehicle performance information such as emissions, fuel consumption and mileage via the vehicle's inbuilt data communication spine. It can also be linked to Internet-capable devices such as laptop computers and PDAs. A further option is an accelerometer, which measures heavy braking, harsh acceleration, hard cornering and rollover to help fleet managerd to identify and correct driving style and reduce wear and tear and likely accidents. In the event of an accident, an 'incident buffer' records detailed second-by-second information including exact location, speed, force and vehicle environment. This function can also be activated manually by the driver where required. Unusually for a telematics unit, the AEM6000 allows over-air remote fault diagnosis, along with remote firmware and configuration checks and upgrades. Automatic daily 'health checks' can be carried out by a central Minorplanet server to monitor the quality of the data being transmitted by each unit. To safeguard the flow and accuracy of the data, the AEM6000 is fitted with an internal battery which cuts in automatically when the external voltage supply drops off.
