Tracking catches fly-tipper
If you thought vehicle tracking was only something you did on your own fleet for commercial and operational reasons, think again. If you're doing something illegal, tracking might be the technology that catches you out! A classic example recently reported to us is one in which a local authority used a tracking system to catch a suspected fly-tipper. The authority suspected that the company had dumped loads illegally on previous occasions, and needed a way to track it that would not require using extensive and costly human resources. Regrettably we can't name either the authority or the contractor, which is unfortunate, but we're assured this is a typical case. The solution was supplied by VIT Innovation, a company specialising in equipment to tackle fly-tipping and other anti-social behaviour. A bespoke GPS tracking unit was hidden inside a glue tube, which was placed amongst the discarded waste due for collection. The load was tracked to a forested area off the main road, and the tracking record plus photographic evidence was enough to allow the authority to take the case to court.
