Trailer and asset tracker from Minorplanet
Asset Tracker is the name given to a new product from Minorplanet Systems for tracking items other than vehicles. The company cites trailer, plant and equipment and other 'critical assets' as likely candidates for the system. The Asset Tracker data collection unit can be covertly fitted to the tracked object, and is monitored to ensure that assets in transit reach their intended destination. Users can also be alerted in the event of theft, aiding recovery. The product is compatible with Minorplanet's VMIgreenlight Web-based tracking system. There are two versions of the hardware - a disposable-battery version and a rechargeable-battery version. With the former, a battery life of up to a year is said to be possible if reporting is limited to four or five instances a day, five days a week. Alternatively, the unit's built in motion sensor can be configured to detect each time the trailer stops moving and transmit its last known position. The auto-rechargeable version is aimed at trailers regularly connected to tractor units, or other assets with on-board power, and is recharged automatically when connected correctly to the power source. When connected, it allows location reporting at any frequency required by the user. This version switches into hibernation mode when disconnected or when its motion sensor detects a prolonged lack of movement. In this state the charge lasts up to 30 hours, and the unit delivers an alert when down to a 10 per cent charge (the disposable-battery version does this too). In both cases, the components are enclosed in a waterproof housing.
