Chep spends over a quarter of a million on tracking trial

Chep, the high-profile international pallet pool operator, is spending £300,000 on a pilot programme to track its own delivery and collection vehicles, and could roll the system out later to up to 1,000 large vehicles.

Chep has chosen Masternaut for the initial trial, which involves fitting mobile collection units in 175 UK-based vehicles. The supplier's online vehicle tracking service will provide Chep's logistics management team with detailed information about each vehicle and its assigned driver in real time.

At the same time, the majority of Chep's UK subcontractors are reported to have been equipped by Masternaut so that they can track their own vehicles.

Chep is also trialling mobile computers for capturing customer signatures and sending proof-of-delivery data instantly back to headquarters using Masternaut. Chep says it sees the potential to reduce paper documentation substantially and streamline administrative and accounting processes.

Chep's UK operation alone is responsible for over 100 million movements of pallets, and provides collection and delivery services to more than 80,000 locations.
