Multi-technology, multimodal global tracking launch
Almost every telemetry technology you can think of is rolled into a new global container and asset tracking system called GlobalEyes launched by UK-based Wavetrend Technologies. The company claims that it is set to revolutionise the way in which assets, people and vehicles are monitored and tracked across the globe.
GlobalEyes uses multiple modes of two-way communication, including active RFID, GPRS, satellite communications, GSM and ZigBee wireless mesh networks. GPS is the prime means of fixing location, and data is processed via what is termed a Web-based 'information management bureau'. This delivers real-time visibility and intelligence on the location, condition and status of high-value assets, as well as other important information.
The company says that by using continuous data transmissions generated by multiple sources, GlobalEyes overcomes the limitations inherent in traditional supply chain infrastructures that rely solely on fixed readers to gather data - perhaps a good-natured side-swipe at systems such as Savi's which track containers passing through ports.
Wavetrend says its new system is ideal for monitoring shipping containers and tracking assets such as vehicles, cargo ships and rail cars. It is also ideal for monitoring military, construction and mining personnel in high-risk environments, the company says.
GlobalEyes is described as the result of a partnership between Wavetrend and System Planning Corporation of Arlington, Virginia, combining Wavetrend's active RFID products with SPC's asset tracking and condition monitoring system.
Wavetrend says it is already working on several pilot projects in the container logistics and vehicle tracking sectors.
