Savi tracks a quarter of a million containers

Savi Networks says its global container tracking network has reached the milestone of recording the 250,000th cargo movement through its system. Savi uses RFID (radio frequency identification) tags or 'e-Seals' on containers to track their movements as they pass through port facilities around the world. Currently Savi says the system covers ports handling one fifth of all world trade.

The seals are monitored by SaviTrak, a software service that captures data automatically from all types of wireless device attached to shipments moving through Savi Networks' infrastructure.

In a move that could encourage further use of the system, Savi Networks says that use of its e-Seals could speed the passage of containers through customs, using so-called 'green lane' clearances. It says it is working with several customs organisations on global container pilot projects using e-Seals based on the ISO 18185 standard.
