MiX emerges as global force in telematics
MiX Telematics is a new name in the telematics and vehicle tracking market, but one with an impressive pedigree. It combines the UK and South African operations of Omnibridge with those of Matrix Vehicle Tracking and CI Omnibridge in Germany. The new name stands for Mobile Information Exchange, and the group is traded on the Johannesburg stock exchange. Omnibridge itself has a long history. For ten years the company was responsible for design and development of the Siemens VDO fleet management product range, which included the Datatrak wireless tracking network. Then in May last year the company also acquired the distribution rights for the fleet management products, plus Siemens VDO's UK-based fleet management and commercial vehicle outfitting businesses. MiX Telematics operates on six continents, and says it has an impressive subscriber base of more than 170,000 'connections', with an installed base of over 300,000 units worldwide. It says it is positioned for 'dramatic accelerated growth'.
