Plug and go tracking and remote diagnostics for car fleets

Tracking the use of hire cars and fleet cars, and collecting performance data in real time, could be easier following the launch of what looks a very simple 'black box' system from two companies, Telit Wireless Solutions and Xirgo Technologies.

Their T-2000 IntelliPort is described as a pioneering M2M application. The small tracking device measures 1.8in by 1.5in and is 1in deep and weighs less than 2oz, and fits in the car's ODB-II (on-board device) port, which is usually directly under the dashboard.

The OBD-II port is standard in vehicles built for North America since 1996, and is also standard in Europe, where it is sometimes known as EOBD. It can gather a range of data such as engine temperature, fuel consumption, engine revs and emission levels.

The IntelliPort device incorporates cellular and optional GPS antenna, and is said to support the five most widely used OBD-II protocols. Data is transmitted back to base via standard GSM networks. It allows operators to monitor the location, status and diagnostic codes available through the OBD.

Xirgo, a global wireless solution provide, says it was looking for a small, rugged and reliable wireless communications 'that did not require any more effort than pushing a button'. Telit, a specialist in machine-to-machine, is said to have provided it.
