Why alert systems are necessary
Every year approximately 200,000 commercial vehicles are stolen, according to European Parliament statistics. Their value is put at more than 7 billion euros (£5.6 billion). And according to the International Road Transport Union, one in six truck drivers has been subjected to some form of attack in the past five years. A third have been attacked more than once. In 60 per cent of the attacks, the main motive is the vehicle and its cargo, while the rest are directed at drivers and their personal belongings. Frighteningly, just over 40 per cent of attacks are said to happen at special parking places intended for trucks. These are among statistics cited by Volvo during its promotion for its new Security Service.
