Push-to-talk and 3G in a single handset
![]() A tough new own-brand mobile handset combining conventional 3G technology with push-to-talk 'walkie-talkie' capability has been launched by InTechnology, a leading proponent of this concept in the UK. The new Mobile Tornado BB3G phone has been tested to IP54 atmospheric and dust resistance standard, and includes a range of features such as SOS alerting, messaging, and 'presence' and GPS location tracking. Push-to-talk, or PTT, is similar in concept to the old private mobile radio (PMR) system, in which users with dedicated handsets could talk to others via dedicated local or regional wireless networks. PTT is different because it can be used anywhere in the world where the technology is supported; and users still have normal mobile phone functionality alongside the PTT capability. InTechnology's PTT system, branded PTX, also allows office workers to communicate with their field workforce from their PC rather than needing to use a handset. As well as allowing multiple workers to communicate at the same time, PTX is seen as an ideal monitoring and security system for lone workers.
