Compact handheld from Mobexx
![]() Having launched the striking blue Hydrus handheld computer from US-based Two Technologies into the UK market (m.logistics, last issue), go-ahead mobility specialist Mobexx has now announced the availability of the Safari, a more compact, pocket-sized rugged handheld from the same maker. Under the bonnet, the two models have various features in common, including the Marvell PXA270 processor and Windows CE 5.0 operating system. However, the Safari runs a little slower (though still at a more than respectable 520MHz), and has less memory as standard (128MB against 256MB). The QVGA screen is also similar, though in the Safari it is in more conventional portrait orientation. And the unit has the option of a 40-hour battery, which is standard on the Hydrus. The Safari has some neat tricks of its own, including a heat- and chemical-resistant case, a transflective TFT colour display, audio (.WAV) feedback, wireless networking, Bluetooth, GPS, GPRS, and integrated 1D bar code scanning. It can have either a 26-key or a 41-key alphanumeric keypad. The Safari weighs less than 400 gm, and is rated at IP65 for dust and water resistance. Oh, and the version we've seen replaces the Hydrus blue with an eye-catching orange.
