18 June 2012 ‘Drivers like the idea of telematics-based insurance’ – survey Although still in its infancy, telematics-based driver insurance is beginning to catch the attention of users, according to the results of a survey by insurance comparison web site Gocompare.com. It found that nearly a fifth of drivers would be happy to consider it at their next insurance renewal time – a figure rising to 59 per cent for over-55s. The survey found that 92 per cent of drivers think insurance premiums should be based largely on the way they drive; 97 per cent think careful drivers should be rewarded with cheaper insurance; 60 per cent think that insurance premiums should be based on location and time of day; but only 49 per cent think premiums should be based largely on age and gender. However, the company says there is still a low level of awareness of telematics-based insurance. It also claims that there is a lack of big-name insurers offering it, and not enough evidence yet of real savings in terms of premiums and fuel costs.
