18 June 2012 Atkins analyses with TomTom travel-time data Engineering and design consultancy Atkins has struck a deal with TomTom to use its Custom Travel Times to analyse road traffic schemes on behalf of UK clients. The company says that by using TomTom’s granular historical traffic database, it will be able to analyse the way different traffic management systems have affected road users’ speed and travel times by conducting "before and after" comparisons. The Custom Travel Times information dates back to 2008, providing the opportunity for analysis of historic road traffic trends for developing of all future road traffic schemes. The TomTom data is derived from the company’s anonymous historical traffic database, which is now said to involved more than five trillion data points.
According to Philip Mendelsohn, Atkins’ data manager, transportation: "TomTom's Custom Travel Times provides us with both the quantity and quality of traffic data that enables us to deliver high quality journey time data to our clients." © Ivory Square Publications Ltd
