18 June 2012 Cross-border fleet management without roaming headaches Although cross-Europe roaming costs for mobile data networks are coming down steadily (see News Update, page xx), currently the challenge of reducing these costs remains a priority for many international transport operators. Strada, a fleet management and vehicle tracking specialist with a presence in France and Spain, reckons it has come up with a smart approach to this problem by incorporating multi-network SIMs from UK specialist supplier Podsystem in its tracking devices. It says this means it can provide users with a Europe-wide service at a fixed cost without the need for them to swap SIM cards or pay roaming fees. Podsystem explains that its MultiNet SIMs have been designed specifically for mobile M2M applications such as this. It says coverage of all European networks ensures that the device remains connected even when the driver is crossing different borders.
If the connection is lost, the SIM automatically connects to the next available network. Since all European networks are included in the fixed monthly data cost, Strada can ensure that the price of its devices remain competitive even if they are travelling across Europe. Podsystem specialises in data SIM cards for the M2M and business travel sectors, and claims to offer coverage worldwide across a wide variety of networks at prices comparable to, or lower than, local single-network SIMs. © Ivory Square Publications Ltd
