18 June 2012 Wireless trailer tracking in SecureSeal-Frotcom partnership SecureSeal, a UK company that is a market leader in intelligent door seals for transport equipment, has struck a deal with Portuguese telematics company Frotcom under which SecureSeal’s wireless trailer monitoring system will be integrated with Frotcom vehicle telematics. The arrangement forms the first initiative by Frotcom following the creation of Frotcom UK, a joint venture with SecureSeal. Working with the new company, SecureSeal will offer the full range of Frotcom telematics products in the UK, and will also give SecureSeal the opportunity to market its own range through a Europe-wide network of other Frotcom partners. SecureSeal’s trailer monitoring system uses radio-frequency technology to monitor trailer functions such as temperature and door and security seal sensors. The data is transmitted wirelessly over a short range so that it can be captured by the tractor unit’s telematics system, and relayed back to base in real time. A pilot installation has already been mounted in Portugal by supermarket group Sonae, an existing SecureSeal customer, which is using it to monitor the security seals and temperature of its trailers.
Historically, capturing data from a trailer and integrating it with a cab-based telematics system has involved hard wiring between the two. This can work, but may be difficult to install and maintain. SecureSeal managing director Cameron Grant comments: "Reliability is everything in trailer monitoring, and that’s why switching from wired-in to wireless RF is the key to success." Frotcom was founded in 1996, and now sells in 30 countries. SecureSeal’s parent, OEM group, dates back to 1976. © Ivory Square Publications Ltd
